Call for Papers for the Special Issue on “Refractories for Smelting of Advanced Steel and Superalloy”

With the rapid development of aerospace, marine engineering, nuclear energy engineering, rail transit and other related fields, the variety demand and quality requirement of advanced steel and superalloy are increasing. Thus, higher requirements are also put forward for refractories for advanced steel smelting and superalloy smelting. In recent years, a series of achievements on refractories for metal smelting and casting have emerged, especially in the fields of lightweight and low/non-carbon refractories, interfacial behavior between refractories and molten slag/steel/superalloy, mechanical properties and fracture behavior of refractories, modeling, non-intrusive testing and visual characterization, integration of structure and function of refractories, refractories for new refining and continuous casting technologies, which have important theoretical and practical significance for supporting production of advanced steel and superalloy for high-end equipment in China.

Accordingly, we plan to organize a topic collection on "Refractories for Smelting of Advanced Steel and Superalloy" in 2023 (Regular Issue) in the Journal of Iron and Steel Research International. Prof. Ao Huang from Wuhan University of Science and Technology, Prof. Beiyue Ma from Northeastern University, Prof. Xinmei Hou from University of Science and Technology Beijing, Prof. Shengli Jin from University of Leoben, and Prof. Xudong Luo from Liaoning Institute of Science and Technology are invited to serve as the guest editors of this special issue. It is our pleasure to invite you to submit original contributions to this special issue. Articles including but not limited to the following topics are welcome.

1 Refractories for advanced steel smelting

1.1 New technology and research progress of refractories for advanced steel smelting;

1.2 Design and preparation of refractories for advanced steel smelting;

1.3 Lightweight and functionalization of refractories for advanced steel smelting;

1.4 Interfacial behavior between molten slag/steel and refractories for advanced steel smelting;

1.5 Modeling and demonstration of interaction between molten slag/steel and refractories for advanced steel smelting;

1.6 Testing, characterization and modeling of mechanical properties and fracture behavior of refractories for advanced steel smelting;

1.7 Refractories for new metallurgical technologies such as ladle refining, nozzle anti-clogging, strip casting, etc;

1.8 Refractories for new ironmaking technologies such as hydrogen-based shaft furnace and hydrogen plasma smelting reduction;

1.9 Other theories and technologies related to refractory development for advanced steel smelting.

2 Refractories for smelting and casting of superalloy

2.1 New technology and research progress of refractories for smelting and casting of superalloy;

2.2 Design and preparation of refractories for smelting and casting of superalloy;

2.3 Chemical stability of refractories for smelting and casting of superalloy under high temperature and vacuum;

2.4 Reaction behavior of refractories for smelting and casting of superalloy;

2.5 Modeling and demonstration of interaction between molten superalloy and refractories;

2.6 Testing, characterization and modeling of mechanical properties and fracture behavior of refractories for smelting and casting of superalloy;

2.7 Other theories and technologies related to refractory development for smelting and casting of superalloy.

This special issue accepts both original research papers and review papers. All submissions will be subjected to a standard peer review process. Experts, scholars, researchers and technicians in the field of refractories for advanced steel and superalloy smelting are welcome to contribute enthusiastically!

Submission of manuscript:

(1) Submission deadline: December 31, 2023 .

(2) The manuscript submitted in English and must meet the requirements of “Instruction for Authors” and “Guide for the Preparation of a Manuscript” of the Journal of Iron and Steel Research International. Please indicate “SI: Refractories for Smelting of Advanced Steel and Superalloy” at the end of the title .
