At the time of frequent good news on China’s LNG shipbuilding industry, Gastalk is very honored to invite Mr. Adnan Ezzarhouni, GM of GTT China, for an exclusive interview, on interested topics of the industry, such as China’s LNG trade, China’s industry chain of LNGC construction , LNG as a marine fuel, on-shore LNG tank technology and GTT Digital, etc.
1:关于我国LNG贸易前景
Gastalk: In 2021, China  overtook Japan as the world’s top LNG importing country, what is your view on  China’s LNG demand in the coming 5 to 10 years?
Gastalk:2021年,中国超过日本成为全球最大的LNG进口国,您对中国未来5至10年的LNG需求有何看法?
安南(Adnan): The LNG demand in  China is expected to keep rising, driven by energy consumption increase and  coal-to-gas switch. After becoming No.1 importer in 2021 with c.80 mtpa  imports, China is expected to become the first country ever to import 100  mtpa in the next 5 years.
安南(Adnan):  在能源消耗增长和煤改气的推动下,中国的LNG需求预计将继续增长。2021年,中国以约8000万吨的年进口量成为第一进口国,预计在未来5年内,中国将成为有史以来第一个年LNG进口量1亿吨的国家。
2:关于我国LNG建造船厂
Gastalk: As we all know, after Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard, Jiangnan Shipyard and Dalian Shipbuilding Industry will also build large-scale LNG carriers. What is your opinion on the achievements of Chinese shipyards in LNG carrier construction in recent years and what is your outlook of Chinese shipyards on LNG carrier construction?
Gastalk:众所周知,在沪东中华船厂之后,江南造船厂和大连船舶重工也将建造大型LNG运输船。您对中国船厂近年来在LNG船建造方面取得的成就有何看法?您对中国船厂在LNG船建造方面有哪些展望?
安南(Adnan): LNG carriers are sophisticated vessels that requires high skills to build, and we are excited to see 2 new shipyards joining the “large-scale LNGC club” in China, in addition to HZ. The current tension on the LNGC shipbuilding market is expected to last, being led by an increase of LNG demand, the current geopolitical crisis in Europe, and by the fleet replacement due to environmental regulations. The newcomers CSSC Jiangnan and CSSC DSIC, as well as the extension of construction capabilities of CSSC Hudong-Zhonghua who will double its available slots to 12, are answers to today’s market requirements.
安南(Adnan): LNG运输船是需要高精技术,高工艺、高标准建造的复杂船舶,我们将看到除 沪东中华 船厂外, 有2家中国船厂加入中国的“大型LNG船建造俱乐部”。 由于LNG需求的增加,当前的欧洲地缘政治危机以及环境法规导致的船队更换等原因,预计LNG运输船造船市场目前紧张的建造计划将持续下去。新加入的中船集团旗下的江南造船和大连船舶重工,以及沪东中华船厂扩展后建造能力将增加一倍达年生产力12艘LNG运输船,将很好的满足当今LNG运输船建造市场的需求。
3:关于我国薄膜舱产业链
Gastalk: More and more Chinese enterprises have obtained GTT certificates and authorization to produce the components of Membrane tank system, what is your opinion on the current and future industry chain of membrane tank construction in China?
Gastalk:越来越多的中国企业获得了GTT证书和授权,成为GTT薄膜围护系统认证的材料供应商。您对中国薄膜围护系统建造产业链现状有何看法?
安南(Adnan): The supply chain in China has reached significant milestone, by having majority of component able to be produced in China. With the current promising market growth in terms of LNG carrier shipbuilding, the LNG as fuel, as well as the trend to adopt also GTT’s Membrane technology onshore, I believe the local supply chain will further expand with more capacities from existing suppliers, and with new local players.
安南(Adnan): 中国的供应链已经达到了一个重要的里程碑, 大部分需GTT认证的材料都可以在中国生产。 鉴于目前在LNG运输船建造以及LNG作为燃料方面的市场增长良好前景,再加上陆上LNG储罐采用GTT薄膜技术的趋势,我相信,随着现有供应商和新的供应商的加入和产能的增加,中国薄膜围护系统建造供应链将进一步扩大。 
4:关于LNG船的EEXI和CII要求
Gastalk: The requirements of EEXI and CII will come into force in the coming soon, how do you think of the challenges of LNG carriers, especially for the LNG carriers built 20 years ago.
Gastalk:EEXI和CII的要求将很快生效,您如何看待LNG运输船的挑战,尤其是20年前建造的LNG运输船。
安南(Adnan): EEXI and CII will indeed apply to LNG carriers, and we can only support this initiative to make shipping cleaner and more sustainable. LNG carriers have made strong improvements over the last decades, mainly on the engines and on the containment systems: over the last 20 years, vessels consumption and Boil-off have been reduced by more than half, and in the meantime their cargo capacity has increased by more than 30%, making the vessels much more efficient. This led to way better economics for modern vessels and we have observed, even before the announcement of EEXI/CII regulation, the start of fleet replacement. New regulation will only accelerate this replacement trend that already started.

5:关于薄膜舱LNG燃料舱
Gastalk: The first LNG fuel tanks adopted in KOREA for large merchant ships was Type B, but now almost all Korean shipyards are switching to Membrane. Can GTT have insight of this U-turn?
Gastalk:韩国为大型商船采用的第一批LNG燃料箱是B型,但现在几乎大多数韩国船厂都在改用薄膜舱。GTT洞察到这种变化吗?
安南(Adnan): This is an interesting question. We believe the main reasons that have led to a switch by Korean shipyards are the actual performance of such tank, as well as the actual tank construction cost for the shipyard. Type B tank is by mistake seen by some shipyards or some provider, as just a structural tank like type A tank, and with limited focus on the external insulation and associated performance. LNG as fuel being selected to lowerCO2 emission, it is critical that such fuel tank can perform in thermal efficiency so that the Boil-off Gas cannot be found in excess compared to the operation profile. We noted that shipowners operating merchants’ ships with type-B tank recently placed order new tonnage with GTT membrane technology onboard. In addition, steel price, design reinforcement and complex welding requirement shows that the cost of such solution is not any more attractive for fuel tank above 5,000m3.

6:关于液氢、液氨作为燃料
Gastalk: At present, liquefied hydrogen and liquefied ammonia have been widely discussed as options for future marine fuel. Is GTT ready for the potential revolution of marine fuel?
Gastalk:目前,液氢和液氨作为未来船用燃料的选择已被广泛讨论。GTT是否已为液氢、液氨等潜在船用燃料做好准备? 
安南(Adnan): Indeed, Ammonia, Hydrogen, and other fuels like Methanol, are being evaluated in the industry. I remind that each fuel has major difference in chemical composition, energy density and boiling temperature, as well as safety risk profile. GTT is working on R&D to propose to the industry relevant solutions to transport and store such alternative fuels.
In the meantime, LNG has also evolved towards sustainability, through bio-LNG and ultimately e-LNG, a carbon neutral fuel. While we are used to read that the LNG fuel is a transition fuel, LNG fuel shall nowadays be described as a fuel in transition.

7:关于陆上LNG储罐技术
Gastalk: GTT has also introduced the Membrane Full Containment technology for onshore, with the popular Beijing Gas (BGG) Emergency Terminal under construction in Tianjin. Can you summarize the key reasons behind the decision for BGG to adopt membrane tank technology?
安南(Adnan):GTT还引进了陆上薄膜型全容罐储罐系统技术,比如天津正在建设的北京燃气(BGG)LNG应急储备项目。请问北京燃气决定采用薄膜型全容罐技术的主要原因有哪些?
安南(Adnan): Indeed, GTT and BGG/BEG signed collaboration MOU in 2019, then officially launched cooperation to build two large membrane onshore tanks (220,000 m3 per tank) for BGG Tianjin LNG Terminal in 2020. Thereafter in 2021, GTT and BGG strengthened collaboration by extending cooperation agreement to build another six large membrane tanks again for BGG Tianjin Terminal. GTT’s onshore membrane technology is a sustainable LNG storage tank system. GTT ’s membrane tank reduces use of cryogenic steel plates up to 90% compared to conventional 9% nickel full containment tank, which minimizes cost impact due to continuously rising nickel raw material price. Less steel use means less welding during construction which can reduce carbon footprint up to 27% for GTT’s Membrane Full Containment tank. Membrane Full Containment tank also increases storage capacity by at least 10% given the same land footprint. It is greatly beneficial for BGG Tianjin Terminal to maximize land use by increasing total storage capacity from 2,000,000 m3 to 2,160,000 m3, without additional investment in land and infrastructure.

8:关于陆上LNG储罐项目
Gastalk: GTT has another onshore project in Hebei province also building membrane tank. What is the progress of this project? 
Gastalk:GTT在河北省还有另一个在建的陆上储罐项目,请问这个项目进展如何?
安南(Adnan): Yes. A small-scale membrane tank (29K m3) using GTT onshore technology is under construction for Huagang Gas Peak-shaving Project in Hebei Province. The Project construction is running well and we expect membrane tank commercial operation in August 2022. 
安南(Adnan): 是的。 河北省华港燃气河间市天然气调峰站项目 正在建设一座采用GTT的小 型陆上薄膜罐(2.9万方净容积)。目前项目建设情况良好,预计将在2022年8月投入商业运行。
9:关于我国薄膜陆上罐技术的应用前景
Gastalk: Do you think there will be more on-shore LNG tank projects using membrane tank technology in China and over the world? 
Gastalk:您是否认为在中国以及全球会有更多的陆上LNG接收站项目将使用薄膜罐技术?
安南(Adnan): GTT’s technology onshore has been widely used in the world since 1972. China has accepted new tank technology by building membrane tanks in two Projects. With more material suppliers and construction outfitters in China qualified by GTT, we believe more projects will accept GTT’s Membrane Full Containment tank in China. In addition, we have on-going projects and prospect projects in different regions of the world. 
安南(Adnan): 自1972年以来,GTT的陆上薄膜储罐技术在世界上得到了广泛应用。 中国通过在两个项目中建造薄膜型全容罐,已接受了这种储罐技术 。随着越来越多的中国材料供应商和施工企业通过GTT认证,我们相信更多的项目将在中国接受GTT薄膜罐技术。此外,我们在其他国家也正在积极的执行和开拓陆上薄膜罐的项目。

10:关于GTT数字解决方案

Gastalk: The world of the future is digital,can you tell us more about GTT Digital solutions?

安南(Adnan): GTT Digital is a comprehensive ship and fleet performance solution for all fleet-type, running on conventional fuel, LNG fuel or others alternative fuels. his single data platform transforms ships data to benefit users such shipowners / charterers, and have been implemented on more 130 vessels. We got excellent feedback from our partners, who are satisfied with the achieved operational expenditures savings and renew their trust in our solution for their following newbuilding vessels. 
安南(Adnan): GTT Digital是针对所有船队类型的综合船舶和船队性能解决方案,包括使用常规燃料、LNG燃料或其他替代燃料的船舶。
        这个单一的数据平台可以转换船舶数据,使船东/承租人等用户受益,并已在130多艘船舶上实施。我们从合作伙伴那里得到了极好的反馈,他们对实现的运营开支节约感到满意,并再次信任我们为他们的后续新建船舶提供的解决方案。
