通过其旗下Hyla品牌，该基础设施将位于加州南海岸空气质量管理区、圣地亚哥县空气污染控制区和莫哈韦沙漠空气质量管理区的货运走廊沿线。

Nikola awarded $41.9m to construct six hydrogen refuelling stations

Nikola has announced it has been awarded a $41.9m grant by the California Transportation Commission (CTC) under the Trade Corridor Enhancement Programme.

The company has been commissioned to build six heavy-duty hydrogen refuelling stations across southern California, the US, to serve heavy-duty hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks.

Through its Hyla brand, the infrastructure will be located along California’s freight corridors within the South Coast Air Quality Management District, San Diego County Air Pollution Control District and Mojave Desert Air Quality Management District.

Each station will be designed to support and scale up over time alongside the growth of heavy-duty hydrogen refuelling needs, and capable of refuelling 80-100 trucks per station a day.

Carey Mendes, President of Nikola Energy, said, “This award, in collaboration with Caltrans, will allow us to accelerate the deployment of zero-emissions hydrogen refuelling infrastructure, which is vital for the successful launch of our hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks in July.”

Caltrans sponsored the application and will collaborate with Nikola in the deployment of the refuelling stations, furthering its zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) strategy to incentivise and support the development and adoption of ZEV freight technology across the state.

The six refuelling stations are expected to be implemented in advance of the predicted ramp up in Nikola’s hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). The company recently received an order for 50 of its Tre hydrogen FCEV truck from AJR Trucking.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with H2 View, Nikola CEO, Michael Lohscheller, said, “We need to set up the whole ecosystem. Obviously, you need to get the hydrogen, then I think the distribution is the next element, then the dispensing and stations come into play.”

He added that he would be satisfied if in the next five years the company sold 1000 fuel cell trucks and had the hydrogen available too for the trucks.
