1. 引言

Jennings J.E.是岩土工程的先驱人物，对南非以及整个岩土工程学科发展作出了突出贡献。 Jennings早年在南非大学毕业后赴哈佛大学求学，受教于现代土力学的鼻祖Terzaghi 和 Casagrande，硕士毕业后返回到南非，在南非金山大学(University of Witwatersrand)担任教授。 Jennings的研究工作对岩土工程领域产生了深远影响，为此，国际土力学与岩土工程学会在其网站上专门开辟了《 J. E. Jennings Publications》专栏，收集了 Jennings的 17篇 土力学论文。根据《计算岩土力学》GeotechSet数据集的统计发现， Jennings的这篇论文最有影响力，至今仍被许多论文引用：

2.  Jennings对岩桥的贡献
