Synthesis and Structure of Tetraphenylglycolide

The title compound (C28H20O4, Mr = 420.44) has been prepared and its crystal structure was determined by X-ray diffraction method. The crystal of the com pound belongs to monoclinic, space group C2/c with a = 23.988(2), b = 9.015(1), c = 22.558(1) (A), β = 116.47(1)°, V = 4366.5(7)(A)3, Z = 8, Dx= 1.279 g/cm3,μ = 0.085 mm-1, F(000) = 1760 and R = 0.0616 for 2138 observed reflections (I ＞ 2σ(I)). The glycolide heterocycle moiety displays a twisted boat conformation. Centroid distance of 3.863(2) (A) between the nearly parallel benzene rings shows the existence of aromatic stacking in the crystal.
