煤炭部全面负责制定煤炭、褐煤储量勘探开发政策、战略，对重大高价值项目进行审批，并决定有关问题。这些关键职能是通过其公共部门事业来行使的，即印度煤业有限公司（CIL）和印度NLC有限公司（NLCIL）以及印度SingareniCollieries有限公司（SCCL），后者是特兰加纳政府和印度政府以51∶49的比例共同承担的部门。
The Ministry of Coal has the overall responsibility of determininpolicies and strategies in respect of exploration and developmentof coal and lignite reserves, sanctioning of important projects ofhigh value and for deciding all related issues. These key functionsare exercised through its public sector undertakings, namely CoalIndia Limited (CIL) and NLC India Limited(NLCIL)and SingareniCollieries Company Limited (SCCL) a joint sector undertaking ofGovernment of Telangana and Govemment of India with eauitcapital in the ratio of 51: 49
