Te U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released its “new source performance standard” (NSPS) on August 3, 2015, requiring new coal power plants in the United States to emit no more than 636 kg (1400 lb) of carbon dioxide (CO2) per megawatt-hour (MWh) of gross power produced. Current state-of-the-art coal-fred plants, based on operations at ultrasupercritical (USC) steam conditions above 593°C (1100°F), emit approximately 800 kg (1760 lb) CO 2/MWh. To reduce CO2 emissions from new coal power plants by more than 20%, EPA’s standard is assumed to require carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology to be applied. Several U.S. states and a number of countries have announced or are considering similar restrictions on CO 2 emissions from new coal-fred plants
