The oil, gas and chemical industries have been separating CO2 from gas streams for decades. In most cases the CO2 is removed in order to meet the required downstream product requirements, whether natural gas, hydrogen or chemicals. The term pre-combustion capture has come into use relatively recently mostly in the context of gasification based power plants, particularly IGCC, where, in anticipation of requirements to limit CO2 emissions, plant designs have been developed to convert the gas produced from gasification (henceforth referred to as ‘syngas’) to hydrogen and CO2 and to remove the CO2 from the syngas stream prior to the combustion of the hydrogen rich gas in the gas turbine.
