Although there have been a number of announced conversions of older, subcritical coal-fired boilers to natural gas, only a few conversions have been completed and little actual experience has been reported. A number of papers1,2,3 have been published by engineering consultants on coal to natural gas conversions that are based on feasibility studies and engineering process models, which provide guidance on what to expect for performance of boilers converted from coal to natural gas. The conclusion reached is that conversion of a subcritical coal-fired boiler is technically feasible but the performance and financial feasibility is uncertain without detailed investigations of the status of the existing boiler to determine both costs and remaining life after conversion
