There are several ways to separate and capture carbon emissions from fossil fueled power plant flue gas which can be classified into three general categories: pre-combustion, oxyfuel and post- combustion. EPRI has active programs in all three of these areas; however, this report only focuses on post-combustion capture for retrofit or new plant applications. Post-combustion processes treat flue gas at the “tail-end,” immediately before it is exhausted from the plant. At this point, the flue gas is at or close to atmospheric pressure, warm, saturated with water vapor, and has a CO2 content of about 12%. The primary goal of a capture system is to remove a high percentage of carbon dioxide from the effluent gas as economic as possible, and to prepare it for permanent storage.
