十年前，美国似乎正处于所谓核复兴的边缘。高天然气价格、新的标准化反应堆设计、精简的监管框架以及更强有力的温室气体监管的前景，都支持了这一点，自20世纪70年代以来，美国公用事业公司开始订购新的核电站。支持者声称，新的反应堆不仅能在现有设计上提供巨大的安全性改进，而且还能以与传统替代品成本竞争的方式生产电力。核能将最终成为一个可行的商业主张，为美国经济摆脱化石燃料的影响提供了一条可供选择的途径。
A decade ago, it appeared that the United States might be on the verge of a so-called nuclear renaissance. Bolstered by high natural gas prices, new standardized reactor designs, a streamlined regulatory framework, and the prospect of stronger greenhouse gas regulations, U.S. utilities began ordering new nuclear power plants for the frst time since the 1970s. Proponents asserted that the new reactors would not merely provide a massive improvement in safety over existing designs but also produce electricity at a cost competitive with conventional alternatives. Nuclear fssion would fnally become a viable business proposition, offering a proftable avenue to wean the American economy off of fossil fuels.
