The world depends on energy, for which we rely predominantly on fossil fuels. Forecasts of global energy demand growth indicate this reliance will continue for many decades to come. The energy sector accounts for around twothirds of greenhouse gas emissions. Increasing quantities of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere – carbon dioxide (CO2), in particular – are contributing to a signifi cant increase in the temperature of the Earth, which is causing climate change.
