The US automotive industry, led by Ford, GM, Fiat Chrysler and Toyota, spent $49 million lobbying in the US in 2017 and engaged in a strategic effort to dismantle a decade of policy progress on vehicle efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions. The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, a trade association funded by these companies, has lobbied extensively to significantly weaken US vehicle fuel economy standards. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is expected to announce new fuel economy rules in the coming months and a decision from the Environmental Protection Agency, the other federal agency involved, as to whether current standards are too stringent is likely around April 1st, 2018.
