2011年和2012年，全球对可再生能源的需求持续增长，2011年(有数据可查的最近一年)，可再生能源占全球最终能源消耗的19%，而传统生物质能只占不到一半。来自现代可再生能源的有用热能估计占总最终能源使用的4.1%;水电约占3.7%;据估计，1.9%的能源来自风能、太阳能、地热、生物质能和生物燃料。
Global demand for renewable energy continued to rise during 2011 and 2012, supplying an estimated 19% of global final energy consumption in 2011 (the latest year for which data are available), with a little less than half from traditional biomass.ii Useful heat energy from modern renewable sources accounted for an estimated 4.1% of total final energy use; hydropower made up about 3.7%; and an estimated 1.9% was provided by power from wind, solar, geothermal, and biomass, and by biofuels.
