  • STABILITY ANALYSIS OF RIVERBANK SUBJECT TO SEEPAGE

    The stability of riverbanks subject to seepage is studied experimentally and theoretically in this paper. By including seepage in a 3-dimensional theoretical analysis, the study first shows how the critical slope or angle of repose of a cohesionless material is related to the ratio of the hydraulic gradient of seepage to its critical value under the fluidization condition. The critical stable slope is shown to be related to not only the hydraulic gradient but also the seepage direction. Measured laboratory data reasonably fit well with the theoretical relationship for the case of injection and suction. The data reveal that the slope is reduced with injection and increased with suction, respectively. Additionally, the study identifies the seepage direction which results in a minimum critical stable slope for a certain hydraulic gradient of seepage....

  • RILL EROSION PROCESS AND RILL FLOW HYDRAULIC PARAMETERS

    In the rill erosion process,run-on water and sediment from upslope areas,and rill flow hydraulic parameters have significant effects on sediment detachment and transport.However,there is a lack of data to quantify the effects of run-on water and sediment and rill flow hydraulic parameters on rill erosion process at steep hillslopes,especially in the Loess Plateau of China.A dual-box system,consisting of a 2-m-long feeder box and a 5-m-long test box with 26.8% slope gradient was used to quantify the effects of upslope runoff and sediment,and of rill flow hydraulic parameters on the rill erosion process.The results showed that detachment-transport was dominated in rill erosion processes; upslope runoff always caused the net rill detachment at the downslope rill flow channel,and the net rill detachment caused by upslope runoff increased with a decrease of runoff sediment concentration from the feeder box or an increase of rainfall intensity.Upslope runoff discharging into the rill flow channel or an increase of rainfall intensity caused the rill flow to shift from a stratum flow into a turbulent flow.Upslope runoff had an important effect on rill flow hydraulic parameters,such as rill flow velocity,hydraulic radius,Reynolds number,Froude number and the Darcy-Weisbach resistance coefficient.The net rill detachment caused by upslope runoff increased as the relative increments of rill flow velocity,Reynolds number and Froude number caused by upslope runoff increased.In contrast,the net rill detachment decreased with an increase of the relative decrement of the Darcy-Weisbach resistance coefficient caused by upslope runoff.These findings will help to improve the understanding of the effects of run-on water and sediment on the erosion process and to find control strategies to minimize the impact of run-on water....

  • Erosion Characteristics of Aluminum-based Metal Matrix Composites in Slurry Environments

    The erosion resistance of the Al18B4O33 whisker reinforced AC4C Al composites in water and saline slurry were investigated using a jet-in-slit rig. Erosion tests were performed at slurry velocities between 6.4 m/s to 15.2 m/s and at normal impact angle. The detachment of flake and dislodgement of whisker were identified as the major mechanisms of material removal in slurry environments. The composites showed better erosion resistance due to the protection of the matrix by the whisker at low slurry velocities. Because of reduced fracture strain, the erosion rates of the composites were generally greater than that of the unreinforced alloy at high slurry velocities. Owing to interfacial reaction which resulted in decrease in hardness and fracture strain,the T6 treatment for the composites had a deleterious influence on the erosion resistance. By considering the material removal processes in the water slurry, a simple rationalization of the inverse dependence of slurry erosion rate on Hεf was obtained. In the saline slurry, there exists a strong synergistic effect between erosion and corrosion.   • STUDY ON THE EROSION RATE OF POWDERED ACTIVATED CARBON IN RAW WATER AQUEDUCT

    Growing interest in using Powdered Activated Carbon (PAC) in raw water aqueduct,as a method of polluted surface water treatment,raises the question of transport of PAC in the aqueduct,which is related to the potential PAC erosion along the aqueduct.By means of a recently developed re-circulating flume,erosion rates of PAC with the grain size of 230 meshes (less than 62 μm)depending on shear stress and bulk density were the discussed with real-time measurement of suspended PAC conccntration.Lateral cross sectional averaging shear stress was decided by the actual value in the raw water conveying aqueduct of upstream Huangpu River,Shanghai,China,smaller than 1.8 N·m 2.As for the bulk density,it was measured with compacting times varying from 1 d to 15 d,equivalent to 1 550 kg/m3-1 800 kg/m3.Experiments were conducted for the shear stress and bulk density separately,so as to isolate and quantify the effects of one of the parameters.The results demonstrate that,for a particular PAC particle,the erosion rate increases with shear stress and decreases with bulk density as a function of power form.A product of powers of the lateral cross sectional averaging shear stress and bulk density to estimate PAC erosion rate is presented by approximating experimental data sets....

    The effects of soil and water conservation (SWC) on soil properties are well documented.However,definitive and quantitative information of SWC and its interactions with soil properties on soil productivity is lacking for hilly red soil region of southern China.Experiments were conducted in the hilly red soil region of southern China for seven years in three runoff plots,each of which represented different SWC forest-grass measures.Principal component analysis and multiple regression techniques were used to relate the aboveground biomass (representing soil productivity) to soil properties.Based on the final regression equations,soil organic carbon content (Soc) is significantly correlated with soil productivity under the condition of forest-grass measures,whereas pH value and cation exchange capacity (Cec) are the main factors for soil productivity without SWC.Therefore,SWC plays an important role in sequestering Soc and improving soil productivity....
