The objective of this study is to examine the performance, environmental response, and economics of co-firing biomass in pulverized coal (PC) power plants. Life cycle emissions were based on various plant configurations (with and without carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and oxycombustion-based) using hybrid poplar biomass at five levels of co-fire (0 percent, 15 percent, 30 percent, 60 percent and 100 percent) with Illinois #6 coal. Included in this study is an analysis of the effects on equipment, such as flue gas desulfurization (FGD) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR), for existing PC plants. Also, as part of the study, a greenhouse gas (GHG) lifecycle inventory of power generation in Greenfield PC power plants incorporating both amine-based and oxycombustion-based carbon capture technology is provided.
