Exact Controllability and Asymptotic Analysis for Shallow Shells
The authors consider the exact controllability of the vibrations of a thin shallow shell, of thickness 2ε with controls imposed on the lateral surface and at the top and bottom of the shell. Apart from proving the existence of exact controls, it is shown that the solutions of the three dimensional exact controllability problems converge, as the thickness of the shell goes to zero, to the solution of an exact controllability problem in two dimensions....

Principal Component Analysis of Cooked Rice Texture Qualities
Texture qualities of cooked rice are comprised of many indexes with the complex relationship, so it is difficult to analyze and evaluate cooked rice.In this paper, the related indexes of texture properties were conversed into the independent indexes of principal component based on the principal component analysis method. The results showed that the rice kernel types influenced the meanings of principal components indexes. For long and short rice, the first principal component was comprehensive index. But the second principal component was springiness for the short rice, while it was adhesiveness for long rice. Therefore, the first principal component can be used to express the quality of cooked rice with a few of indexes, and the rice type can be recognized according to the second principal component....

Mesh Smoothing Method Based on Local Wave Analysis
As the mesh models usually contain noise data,it is necessary to eliminate the noises and smooth the mesh. But existed methods always lose geometric features during the smoothing process.Hence, the noise is considered as a kind of random signal with high frequency, and then the mesh model smoothing is operated with signal processing theory.Local wave analysis is used to deal with geometric signal, and then a novel mesh smoothing method based on the local wave is proposed. The proposed method includes following steps:Firstly, analyze the principle of local wave decomposition for 1D signal, and expand it to 2D signal and 3D spherical surface signal processing; Secondly, map the mesh to the spherical surface with parmeterization, resample the spherical mesh and decompose the spherical signals by local wave analysis; Thirdly, propose the coordinate smoothing and radical radius smoothing methods, the former filters the mesh points' coordinates by local wave, and the latter filters the radical radius from their geometric center to mesh points by local wave; Finally, remove the high-frequency component of spherical signal, and obtain the smooth mesh model with inversely mapping from the spherical signal.Several mesh models with Gaussian noise are processed by local wave based method and other compared methods. The results show that local wave based method can obtain better smoothing performance, and reserve more original geometric features at the same time....

Model analysis for combustion characteristics of RDF pellet
Fundamental studies of the combustion characteristics and the de-HCl behavior of a single refuse-derived fuel(RDF) pellet were carried out to explain the de-HCl phenomena of RDF during fluidized bed combustion and to provide data for the development of high efficiency power generation technology using RDF previously. For further interpreting the devolatilization and the char combustion processes of RDF quantitatively, an unsteady combustion model for single RDF pellet, involving reaction rates, heat transfer and oxygen diffusion in the RDF pellet, was developed. Comparisons of simulation results with experimental data for mass loss of the RDF samples made from municipal solid waste, wood chips and poly-propylene when they were heated at 10K/min or put into the furnace under 1073K show the verifiability of the model. Using this model, the distributions of the temperature and the reaction ratio along the radius of RDF pellet during the devolatilization process and the char combustion process were presented, and discussion about the inference of heating rate on the combustion characteristics were performed....

Failure analysis used for remanufacturing of steel rolling components
The guide-pieces, used in the process line of steel roiling, were the important components. The guidepieces, which were slide contacting with the rolled-piece, had a high temperature and high speed. The wear was very serious. The results from failure analysis showed that there were three failure forms in the guide-pieces: the first was the wear during heat friction, the second was the heat fatigue under the cycle of deep heating and deep cooling, and the third was the impact rupture. Among them, the wear was the main reason. To the wear of guidepieces, there were four mechanisms, namely abrasive wear, adhesive wear, fatigue wear and corrosion wear. The failure analysis to the guide-piece laid the foundation for its remanufacturing....

OPERATIONAL MODAL ANALYSIS SCHEMES USING CORRELATION TECHNIQUE
For some large-scale engineering structures in operating conditions, modal parameters estimation must base itself on response-only data. This problem has received a considerable amount of attention in the past few years. It is well known that the cross-correlation function between the measured responses is a sum of complex exponential functions of the same form as the impulse response function of the original system. So this paper presents a time-domain operating modal identification global scheme and a frequency-domain scheme from output-only by coupling the cross-correlation function with conventional modal parameter estimation. The outlined techniques are applied to an airplane model to estimate modal parameters from response-only data....

Quantitative analysis of microstructure of carbon materials by HRTEM
The main object of the present research is to make a quantitative evaluation on the microstructure of carbon materials in terms of microcrystal. The digitized images acquired from finely pulverized carbon materials under HRTEM at a high magnification were processed by the image processing software so as to extract the fringes of (002) lattice of graphite crystal from the background image, and an FFT-IFFT filtering operation was performed followed by processes as binarization for the image and skeletonization for the fringes. A set of geometrical parameters including position, length and orientation was set up for every lattice fringe by calculating the binarized image. Then, the above obtained fringe parameters were put into an algorithm, which was especially developed for such fringe images so as to find fringes that could be regarded as those belonged to one single graphite microcrystal. The fringe was subjected sequentially to comparing procedures with every other fringe on aspects as parallelism, relative position and spacing, and the above comparisons were repeated till the last fringe. Eventually, the microcrystal size, its stacking number, and the distribution of the microcrystal in the whole sample,as well as other related structure information of such microcrystal in carbon materials were statistically calculated. Such microstructure information at nanometer level may contribute greatly to the interpretation of the properties of carbon materials and a better correlation with the same macrostructure....

Exergy analysis on eco-industrial systems
Exergy analysis of eco-industrial systems reflects the thermodynamic characteristics of resource utilization by studying complicated material flow patterns to an industrial system. Different indicators based on exergy analysis are presented, such as system exergy depletion index, cycling ratio of material exergy, etc. which can be used to evaluate the efficiency of resource utilization and the environmental potential effect. The interrelations of these exergy indicators and their interpretation on industrial ecology are further discussed. Finally, the result of case study suggests effectiveness of exergy analysis methods and practicability of these exergy estimate indices....

A Spatial Cluster Analysis of Heavy Rains in China
Clustered heavy rains (CHRs) defined using hierarchical cluster analysis based on daily observations of precipitation in China during 1960-2008 are investigated in this paper. The geographical pattern of CHRs in China shows three high-frequency centers-South China, the Yangtze River basin, and part of North China around the Bohai Sea. CHRs occur most frequently in South China with a mean annual frequency of 6.8 (a total of 334times during 1960-2008). June has the highest monthly frequency (2.2 times/month with a total of 108 times during 1960-2008), partly in association with the Meiyu phenomenon in the Yangtze River basin. Within the past 50 years, the frequency of CHRs in China has increased significantly from 13.5 to 17.3 times per year, which is approximately 28%. In the 1990s, the frequency of CHRs often reached 19.1 times per year. The geographical extent of CHR has expanded slightly by 0.5 stations, and its average daily rainfall intensity has increased by 3.7 mm d-1. The contribution of CHRs to total rainfall amount and the frequency of daily precipitation have increased by 63.1% and 22.7%, respectively, partly due to a significant decrease in light rains. In drying regions of North and Northeast China, the amounts of minimal CHRs have had no significant trend in recent years, probably due to warming in these arid regions enhancing atmospheric convectivity at individual stations....
