ASTM是美国最老、最大的非盈利性的标准学术团体之一。经过一个世纪的发展，ASTM现有33669个（个人和团体）会员，其中有22396个主要委员会会员在其各个委员会中担任技术专家工作。ASTM的技术委员会下共设有2004个技术分委员会。有105817个单位参加了ASTM标准的制定工作，主要任务是制定材料、产品、系统、和服务等领域的特性和性能标准，试验方法和程序标准，促进有关知识的发展和推广。
