Hydrodynamic Analysis of C-start in Crucian Carp
The kinematics of turning maneuvers of startled Crucian Carp (Carassius auratus) are presented. All escape responses observed are C-type fast-starts. The position of the center of mass and the moment of inertia of the fish are calculated.The results show that the position of the center of mass is always at 35 % of the length of the fish from the head and the position of the center of mass and moment of inertia can be considered unchanged during C-start of Crucian Carp. Hydrodynamic analysis of the C-start is given based on the kinematics data from our experiments. The C-start consists of three stages. In stage 1, the tail fin of fish rapidly flaps in one direction, and a large moment acts on the fish's body, which rotates around the center of mass with an angular acceleration. In stage 2, the tail fin flaps more slowly in the opposite direction at slower speed, the fish's body rotates around the center of mass with angular deceleration and the center of mass of the fish moves along an arc. In stage 3, the moment approximately equals zero, the fish's body stops rotating and the center of mass the moves along a straight line....

Phenomena and theoretical analysis for the failure of brittle rocks
Rockburst,an unstable failure of brittle rocks,has been greatly concerned in rock mechanics and rock engineering for more than 100 years.The current understanding on the mechanical mechanism of rockburst is based on the Coulomb theory,i.e.compressive-shear failure theory.This paper illustrates a series of tensile and tensile-shear fracture phenomena of rockburst,and proposes a methodology for the analysis of fracture mode and its energy dissipation process based on Griffith theory.It is believed that: (1) the fracture modes of rockburst should include compressive-shear,tensile-shear and pure tensile failures; (2) the rupture angle of rock mass decreases with the occurrence of tensile stress; (3) the proportion of kinetic energy in the released strain energy from a rockburst may be much larger than that transferred into surface energy; and (4) the understanding on the tensile and tensile-shear failure modes of rockburst may change the basic thinking of rockburst control,i.e.from keeping the reduction in initial compressive stress σ3 to restricting the creation of secondary tensile stress....

The topological configuration and conformational analysis of mRNA in translation
The theoretical model construction of mRNA hairpin structure and single-stranded structure as well as the simulation studies on RNA structure determined by the X-ray crystal diffraction and nuclear magnetic resonance revealed that in translation, after mRNA being unfolded into single-stranded structure, its topological configuration was closely correlative with the original hairpin structure. The analysis of the bending stiffness and intensity of cylindrical tubes
Based on the mechanics of material, the bending stiffness and intensity of cylindrical bar and tube are analyzed. By comparing the cylindrical tube whose ratio of outside diameter to internal diameter is 0.7 with the cylindrical bar, it is concluded that when both of them have the same mass, the section stiffness of the cylindrical tube is three times that of the cylindrical bar; when both of them have the same external diameter, the mass of the cylindrical tube is only 1/2 that of the cylindrical bar, but the section stiffness of the cylindrical tube is 3/4 that of the cylindrical bar.By virtue of the elemental elastic-plastic theory, the yield stress of the liquid-filled cylindrical tube is investigated. Due to the incompressibility of liquid and the strain hardening effect of material, the yield stress of the liquid-filled tube is enlarged compared with the hollow tube, thus raising its bending intensity. Under the dynamic load, compared with the hollow tube, the impact resistance of the liquid-filled tube is also raised due to elastic recovery. Because the hydraulic pressures perpendicular to the inner surface are identical everywhere, the local stress concentration resulting from the ovalisation of the tube would be decreased, and the resistance to buckling would be improved....

STABILITY ANALYSIS OF RIVERBANK SUBJECT TO SEEPAGE
The stability of riverbanks subject to seepage is studied experimentally and theoretically in this paper. By including seepage in a 3-dimensional theoretical analysis, the study first shows how the critical slope or angle of repose of a cohesionless material is related to the ratio of the hydraulic gradient of seepage to its critical value under the fluidization condition. The critical stable slope is shown to be related to not only the hydraulic gradient but also the seepage direction. Measured laboratory data reasonably fit well with the theoretical relationship for the case of injection and suction. The data reveal that the slope is reduced with injection and increased with suction, respectively. Additionally, the study identifies the seepage direction which results in a minimum critical stable slope for a certain hydraulic gradient of seepage....

Extending and analysis of X-Code
X-Code is one of the most important redundant array of independent disk (RAID)-6 codes which are capable of tolerating double disk failures. However, the code length of X-Code is restricted to be a prime number, and such code length restriction of X-Code limits its usage in the real storage systems. Moreover, as a vertical RAID-6 code, X-Code can not be extended easily to an arbitrary code length like horizontal RAID-6 codes. In this paper, a novel and efficient code shortening algorithm for X-Code is proposed to extend X-Code to an arbitrary length. It can be further proved that the code shortening algorithm maintains the maximum-distance-separable (MDS) property of X-Code, and namely, the shortened X-Code is still MDS code with the optimal space efficiency. In the context of the shortening algorithm for X-Code, an in-depth performance analysis on X-Code at consecutive code lengths is conducted, and the impacts of the code shortening algorithm on the performance of X-Code in various performance metrics are revealed....
